Auguste Sarrou (1874-1968) was a French officer who served in Macedonia, Istanbul and Anatolia in a period of profound regional change. He was born in Patras, Greece, to a French merchant father and later completed his studies in Istanbul. In 1894 Sarrou entered the French army. This book traces two periods of his military service for the Ottoman Empire. The first period stretches from 1904 to 1908, when Sarrou participated in an international mission in Macedonia aiming to reorganize the Ottoman gendarmerie following the agreement in Muersteg. In the second period, from 1908 to 1914, he served the Sublime Porte as one of the contributors to the reform of the gendarmerie, which converted it to an organ efficiently providing national security and defence. This book written in French was penned by Sarrou’s son based on his father’s notes, and was first published in 1978. Supplied with original correspondence and photographs, it would be of benefit to those interested in the Ottoman military and Macedonian and late Ottoman history.
