Of the two most important manuscripts of the Septuagint, the Alexandrinus (A) shows close affinity to the Masoretic text, while the Vaticanus (B) often departs radically from it, not only in individual readings, but in the dislocation of whole sentences and passages with respect to the Hebrew. Critics agree that this proves the priority and authenticity of B, A being a reworking on the basis of the Hexapla, as shown by a comparison of A with the Syrian translation of the Hexapla of III Kings. B's relationship to the Hexapla is less clear, but Silberstein argues that there is reason to accept the contention that it is related to the text Origen used in compiling the Hexapla. After discussing the origin and nature of the Syriac Hexapla, Silberstein presents a detailed comparison of the Masoretic, Vaticanus, Alexandrinus, Syro-Hexaplaric, and Peshitta text of III Kings.
