The first report of the ruins of the city at Kwei-hua once inhabited by the Ongut Turks in the bend of the Huang Ho. Owen Lattimore, the historian of Central Asia, was led there by a ghost story: less than a year before his arrival, a local magnate had taken bricks from the ruin without appeasing the spirits; his wife was duly possessed by the Lord of the City, who threatened the magnate, and the story spread over Mongolia. Lattimore, enquiring, found that the city contained distinctively Christian monuments (photographs are included), describes the ruins, and discusses the history of the area since the Mongol empire, whose regional administrator is likely to be remembered as the "Lord of the City" | |
