A doctoral dissertation from the University of Erlangen: The Categories of Aristotle was translated into Syriac in a version attributed to the philosopher and linguist Jacob of Edessa; like many Syriac translations, this is a fundamental part of the transmission of Aristotle to the Arabs and the modern world. The text is edited from two manuscripts; the intoduction outlines the importance of the translation and collates the text with the Greek original.
