The Aimak or Aymaq people of Afghanistan are proud of their descent from the warriors of Genghis Khan; this paper, by the President of the Finno-Ugrian Society, analyses their language as a Mongol dialect, influenced by Persian. A substantial corpus of Aimak is presented, with the resulting lexicon, analysis of sound-shifts, and the inflections of nouns and verbs. This handy introduction to one of the more obscure Afghan languages has renewed topicality in the twenty-first century.
