Köhler discusses guidelines for an improved Hebrew dictionary. While basing itself on the Masoretic text, it must mark all doubtful words. Conjectural emendations must be cited under the word to be emended and under the emendation. The Septuagint is to be cited where it can cast light on text or interpretation. Conjecturally suggested Hebrew words must be collected and evaluated. Synonyms need to be critically treated; Köhler suggests treatment of Hebrew vocabulary for specific fields (sailing, animal husbandry, house construction, etc.) as a worthy task for dissertations. A dictionary should cite and make use of marginal notes in the existing MT. As far as possible, the dictionary should note whether a word is used predominantly in pre-exilic, exilic, or post-exilic texts. A full account of the usage and contexts of words is needed. The dictionary should draw on both archeology and the observation of contemporary folk-life in the region and elsewhere; description of ancient Hebrew culture is the goal of OT lexicography. Köhler gives several model articles as examples. Ludwig Köhler was a professor of Old Testament at the University of Zürich, best known for his work on the Köhler-Baumgartner Hebrew and Aramaic lexicon.
