In the late 19th century a series of Syriac inscriptions was discovered by several priests working in the mission in Chosrava. These inscriptions demonstrate both linguistic unity with other Syriac inscriptions from the period and distinct qualities of a local dialect used within the ancient Persian district of Salamas. Four of the engravings are funerary inscriptions from cemeteries, while the other four come from ancient church buildings. The present publication offers a transcription and translation for each inscription accompanied by a brief commentary on their unique features. The introduction provides a helpful overview of the history of the discovery and publication of these inscriptions, as well as a brief discussion of the linguistic development of the dialect of Syriac spoken in Salamas as opposed to the Syriac spoken in Urmia.
