In the early 20th century, Western Syriac Christians produced periodicals that reflect the growing community of immigrants in the United States. Babylon is the only Armenian-language Syriac periodical, published in Boston between 1919 and 1921. Akopian discusses Babylon in the context of the Kharberd community. At the time, Kharberd was one of the two cities most populated by Armenian-speaking Syriac Christians. Most of the U.S. immigrants from Kharberd settled in the area of Worcester, Massachusetts, nearby Boston. Akopian details the language origins of the periodical, and provides images and an analysis of its 15th issue. Syriac appeared interspersed with the Armenian language, sometimes with a translation. Most of those words were nouns, adjectives and numerals. | |
