| | Aramaeans in Iraq after the Muslim Conquest by Michael Morony This extract from Michael G. Morony’s Iraq After The Muslim Conquest presents a brief yet through presentation of the complex language and political history of the Aramaeans of that region. | | Contributions Toward a History of Arabico-Gothic Culture by Wiener argues that Germanic languages have arisen by a sudden influx of Low Latin and Arabic. He demonstrates that they developed from the Graeco-Latin glossaries through Gothic interpretations, which owe their origin to the Graeco-Arabic learning in Spain. |
| | Einleitung in das Studium der Arabischen Sprache by Georg Freytag The introduction to the Arabic language by the renowned linguist Georg Freytag is fast becoming difficult to find. Written in German, this precise presentation is intended for a general readership which has no background in previous Semitic language study. The Arabic period covered for this historic grammar is that of Mohammed and later. In some ways an unconventional approach Freytag introduces topics such as Arabic names and the history of the Arabs, even prior to Mohammed’s time. An outline of the Arabic language and its dialects is presented. A period piece that retains its functionality, this introduction to Arabic is more than a grammar, it is a view into the life of the Arabian world. |

More of a grammatical tool than an actual grammar, this Arabic publication of ten ancient treatises on Arabic philology is a useful tool for the student of Arabic who already knows the basics of the language. Originally published in parts in Revue al-Machriq, the treatises spurred the interests of readers in having all ten collected in one place. This second edition of Dix Anciens Traités de Philologie Arabe contains the ten treatises, with footnotes and indexes in a corrected version. Each piece begins with a description of the manuscript and what is known of the author. More than a contribution to grammatical studies, this volume enters into the realm of philology, a precursor to many a dictionary.
August Haffner (1869-1941) studied at the Theological Faculty in Innsbruck and at Munich. After completing his Habilitation and traveling through western Asia, he returned to Innsbruck as professor. He published several works in Arabic studies.
Louis Cheikho (1859-1927) was a Jesuit priest in Lebanon and was one-time director of the Bibliothèque Oriental in Beirut. Fr. Cheikho traveled widely throughout Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Turkey to acquire manuscripts.
