This work is of great value to students of geography and climatology as well as those interested in the history of the Mediterranean, the Near East and Central Asia.

Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947) was a professor of geography and economics at Yale University. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at Beloit College in Wisconsin, his Master’s degree at Harvard and his doctoral work at Yale. His research in geography, economics and climatic determinism is renowned.

Dr. Barry Vann holds two doctorates, including a PhD dually awarded by the Faculties of Geography and Earth Science and Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow. Professor Vann is becoming known as an authority on population change, religion and secular society. Since 1998, he has published three books that connect real and imagined religious communities created by British policies on Northern Ireland to subsequent Protestant migrations to colonial North America where Irish Protestants helped form the theologically inspired and politically powerful region known as the Bible Belt. His latest work tackles the demographic, political and social changes occurring in the secular west as migration from Islamic countries increases. He has also authored a number of articles for refereed journals on topics ranging from transatlantic studies to historical sociology.

Jacob of Sarug's Homily on Samson

Recognized as a saint by both Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians alike, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) produced many narrative poems that have rarely been translated into English. Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug’s homilies, this volume contains his homily on Samson. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. The volume is one of the fascicles of Gorgias Press’s Complete Homilies of Saint Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain all of Jacob’s surviving sermons.

The Martyrdom of Mar Grigor Piran-Gušnasp and The Martyrdom of Mar Yazd-panah

In the mid-6th century, Grigor, the general of the Sasanian king’s armies and a converted from Zoroastrianism to Christianity, was put to death. This event brings about the conversion of several Zoroastrian notables such as Yazd-panāh, a judge who also died as a martyr three years later, and the courtier ʿAwira. The reign of King Khusrō I (531–579) was a key-chapter in the history of the Persian Empire, but also for the Church of the East, some members of which were involved in the Sasanian administration. These East-Syrian historical texts, which are among the few passions of this period in Syriac, have received little scholarly attention. This volume offers a critical text and commentary, as well as the first translation into English of these two martyr texts. Written by contemporaries, they provide valuable information regarding socio-religious life and the political context. They demonstrate how Persian Christians, despite sporadic persecution, were able to maintain a distinct identity while simultaneously acculturating to the norms of Iranian society.
