In this two-volume set, volume 1 in Syriac and volume 2 in English, Budge offers the two documents entitled “The History of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and “The History of the Likeness of Christ which the Jews of Tiberias Made to Mock at.” These two manuscripts represent the genre of New Testament apocrypha and originate in perhaps the late fourth century. |
| | A Commentary upon the Gospel According to S. Luke by S. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria by As the title of this work broadly indicates, it is the translation into English of St. Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on the Gospel of Luke. This manuscript document had recently been acquired by Oxford University in Syriac. Payne Smith published an edition, but quickly realized that the work would largely go ignored if it were not translated into English. Cyril’s own interpretation of one of the Gospels focuses a crucial eye on a major source for understanding early Christianity. |
| | Manuscrits Syriaques Conservés dans la Bibliothèque des Maronites d’Alep (Syrie) by Francisco del Río Sánchez The Maronite Library of Aleppo is one of the most important collections of manuscripts in Syria. This catalogue gives the first detailed description of the Syriac copies, containing also images and indices of titles, personal names, subjects and places. |
| | The Conquest of Syria by A representative of the Arabic genre known as “futuh reports,” the Conquest of Syria remains an important historical source although it is now recognized not to be a genuine work of Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Omar Ibn Waqid al-Aslami (generally called al-Waqidi). This Arabic document, part history, part romantic reconstruction of the past, is one of the main sources narrating the Muslim conquest of Syria. A window into the world of early Muslim self-perception, these documents are a valuable historical source in the sense of being period pieces. Here the Arabic text is presented along with the partial notes and comments of W. Nassau Lees, a noted writer on Eastern culture. An English introduction is presented followed by the text of the Arabic account. |
| | Early Travels in Palestine by This delightful collection of travelogues from the years c. 700 – 1697 catalogues the views of European travelers and pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Wright includes a series of brief accounts from early in this period from Bishop Arculf, Willibald, and Bernard the Wise. Narratives of Saewulf, Sigurd the Crusader, and Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela give the outlook of Christian and Jewish travelers. The work concludes with the lengthier accounts of Sir John Maundeville, Bertandon de le Brocquière, and Henry Maundrell. |

One of the rarer publications of Gottheil, his edition of the Syriac-Arabic glosses of Isho Bar Ali is a publication difficult to locate. These glosses are located in the second part of Bar Ali’s lexicon, as the first part had been previously published. Working with 21 manuscripts, Gottheil ably constructed a record of the glosses for the specialized readership of this ninth century scholar. The work of Bar Ali is represented by a short recension that has undergone three enlargements. Bar Ali, a physician as well as a lexicographer, produced this noted Syriac-Arabic dictionary showing the meanings of Syriac words in Arabic. This historic step in the development of Syriac lexicography is analyzed here according to the glosses of the numerous manuscripts cited in the forward. Completing a work that had been begun 20 years earlier, Gottheil’s contribution to the field of Syriac studies will be appreciated by students of the history of the language.
Richard James Horatio Gottheil (1862-1936) was educated at Columbia and Leipzig. Concerned with the reception of Jews in American society, he was an advocate of Zionism and a supporter of Jewish students at his home institution of Columbia University. His name is widely recognized from the many Columbia dissertations he supervised, many of which were subsequently published. He also held the office of President of the Society of Biblical Literature.
