In Das Sendschreiben des Patriarchen Barschuschan an den Catholicus der Armenier (“The Circular Letter of Patriarch Bar Shushan to the Catholicos of Armenia”) Lichti presents the Syriac text, along with a German introduction and translation, of a treatise of the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch John Bar Shushan (d. 1072), accompanied by relevant supplemental readings from various Church Fathers. The treatise is addressed to the Armenian Catholicos, and attacks the Melkite tradition. Beginning with the Creed of Faith, it moves swiftly into a criticism of practices found within the Armenian Church. There is also a defense of the method used by the author’s own congregation in making the Eucharistic bread. Lichti’s introduction sets the work and its author well within their eleventh century ecclesial context, while his translation ably renders the text for the non-specialist.
Otto Lichti submitted this work as his thesis at Yale University in 1911.
