Buy this book together with East and West by Juan Pedro Monferrer-Sala
Hannibal's invasion of Italia in 218 BC is depicted from the standpoint of environmental evidence eliticted from ancient texts and analyzed against present-day Earth science databases leading to the conclusion the Punic Army followed the southern route over the Alps as first proposed by Sir Gavin de Beer in the 1960's. +This book traces the rich religious, cultural, artistic, ecconomical, social and historical relations among the Greeks and the Middle East people from the Late Antiquity up to the 17th century.Save $36.60

The Rebuke of Islam by W. H. T. Gairdner
Temple Gairdner’s The Rebuke of Islam, published in 1920, has long been recognized as one of the classics of Christian response to Islam in the early 20th century. Part of its significance is that Gairdner’s approach sums up the very best of earlier approaches (especially in the 19th century), but breaks significantly new ground and therefore points forward to approaches that have been developing between his time and the present day.

Sufism: Its Saints and Shrines by John Subhan
A convert to Christianity from the Qadiri Order, John A. Subhan is well-known for his seminal work, Sufism: Its Saints and Shrines. Sufism prepared him for faith in Jesus and his Injil. His Sufi background and intimate knowledge of its beliefs and practices enabled him to explain Sufism to others. All ten chapters in Sufism are interesting not least the chapter eight which contains an engaging comparative discussion of Sufism in the broader Hindu context. It is a must read for all, not only because it is a window into the world of a great Sufi convert but also because it provides us with a view of his world, some or most of which still continues.

Moslem Women by Samuel Zwemer
Moslem Women is built around six main chapters, with half devoted to the place and experience of Islamic women and half considering Christian mission to Islamic women and associated themes. The Zwemers acknowledge some of the great women of Islamic history, such as Rabia, the famous early mystic, and Nurah Mahal, wife of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. They speak in glowing terms about advances in the women’s situation in post-Ottoman Turkey. Samuel and Amy Zwemer’s dedication to serving Muslims and to seeing them as people rather than as faceless numbers provides an excellent model for today’s Christians who feel called to engagement with Islam.

In fall, 218 BC, the Punic Army under Hannibal marched from Cartegena in Iberia across the Pyrénées to the Rhône River and over the Alps to the Po River Plains in one of the most ambitious and unorthodox mountain military operations of all time. As winter closed in the Punic Army regrouped in the upper Guil Valley and prepared to cross the Col de la Traversette to meet the legions of Publius Cornelius Scipio on the Po River. Hannibal altered the center of gravity in the looming Roman/Carthaginian conflict by opening a second front in northern Italia. The environment proved as much an enemy to Hannibal as marauding Gallic tribes, an ever present and always looming imminent danger during the mountain crossing. Relying on sources in the ancient literature, mainly Polybius and Livy, this volume correlates and analyzes the physical environment with historical descriptions to pinpoint the route taken by the Punic Army. Unlike previous accounts of the invasion by scores of historians who have argued over the route for the last two millennia this volume delves into the historical, geological, topographical and environmental evidence to identify the actual route. As well, sites are identified and discussed for potential geoarchaeological interest on the military culture of ancient Carthage.

William C. Mahaney is the president of Quaternary Surveys an environmental consulting firm and former director of the Geomorphology and Pedology Lab at York University in Toronto. He is professor emeritus at York University and is the holder of the G.K. Gilbert award (1993) of the AAG for excellence in geomorphologic research. He has written extensively in the area of Quaternary geologic research. See Author's web site
