Prior to the publication of this article, various stories attributed to Anastasius concerning the holy fathers of Sinai were found only partially in various manuscripts and collections of patristic writings. François Nau collected these sources, collated the text, and presents the annotated version of forty stories about the monks of Sinai. These stories include previously unknown anecdotes about St. John Climacus and various stories pertaining to monastic life in Sinai during the seventh century. The stories are also important because they corroborate geographic and historical details found elsewhere, and they pre-date many of the other sources for this information. Nau offers a physical description of each manuscript used in the collation, and then presents the text along with variant readings and references to Migne’s text when applicable. Nau also appends an account of the capture of Sinai by the Arabs.
