A very old Syriac manuscript (dated 411) contains, among other well known works, a translation of Eusebius’s small book on the martyrs of Palestine. There are two recensions of the Greek text, a longer and a shorter, both of which have now been edited. The Syriac translation was made not many decades after the author’s death in ca. 340. In this volume, Cureton offers that Syriac text, printed in a beautiful Estrangela script, an English translation, and a large number of annotations of a historical, literary, and philological nature. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of fourth-century church history and of Greek-Syriac translation.

Picture of The Chronicle of Zuqnīn

The Chronicle of Zuqnīn

The Chronicle of Zuqnin is a universal history beginning with the Creation according to the biblical account and ending with the time of the Chronicler, the years 775-776 AD. The author is most probably Joshua the Stylite, a contemporary of the Caliphs al-Mansur and al-Mahdi, who lived in the monastery of Zuqnin that was located near Amid, the Diar-Bakr of modern Turkey. Parts I and II contain compiled sources some of which survived only in this Chronicle. Sources include the Bible, Cave of Treasures, the Sleepers of Ephesus, Eusebius of Caesarea, Socrates, and the short Chronicle called Pseudo-Joshua the Stylite that deals with Sassanian-Byzantine warfare at the begging of the 6th century. Parts III and IV cover the years 488 and 775 AD. In this volume, Parts I and II, including the author’s dedicatory letter, are now published in an updated edition of the Syriac text and the first English translation.

History of Eastern Christianity (paperback)

This book is a classic in the history of the Oriental Churches, which are sometimes portrayed as heretical in general church history books, if mentioned at all. Written by a Copt, it portrays the history of the faith of these non-Chalcedonian Churches with first-hand knowledge of their traditions. The author covers Alexandrine Christianity (the Copts and the Ethiopians), the Church of Antioch (Syriac Orthodox), the “Nestorian” Church of the East, the Armenian Church, the St. Thomas Christians of South India, the Maronite Church, as well as the Vanished Churches of Carthage, Pentapolis, and Nubia.
