The early nineteenth-century saw a number of Western missionaries and scholars visit the Middle East with the intent of learning more about the peoples and cultures of various regions. One such trip was that undertaken by Eli Smith and Harrison Dwight, who traveled to the areas of Armenia, Turkey, and Georgia in order to find communities of Armenian Orthodox Christians in their native lands and to learn more about them. Smith and Dwight were sent by the American Board of Missions with the task of learning about the Armenian Christians in hope that building such a relationship would lead to further Christian mission activity in the area. The present volume is the travelogue written from the personal notes and letters of Smith and Dwight while on their journey. It provides very interesting observations on life in early nineteenth-century Armenia and surrounding areas.

The Armenian Church Synaxarion is a collection of saints’ lives according to the day of the year on which each saint is celebrated. Part of the great and varied Armenian liturgical tradition from the turn of the first millennium, the first Armenian Church Synaxarion represented the logical culmination of a long and steady development of what is today called the cult of the saints. This volume, the first Armenian-English edition, is the fifth of a twelve-volume series—one for each month of the year—and is ideal for personal devotional use or as a valuable resource for anyone interested in saints.
