The presence of Islam in South-Eastern Europe dates back to the 14th century or even earlier. What is often forgotten is that the spread of Islam in these areas in the Ottoman period was not only a result of forced conversion practices but also of persuasion. In fact, the Islamization of the Balkans during the centuries of Ottoman rule was less due to (devshirme) and the immigration of Muslims from Asia than to the more subtle long term influences of dervishes, charismatic sheikhs and wandering preachers and their ties with Ottoman officials. This volume by Michel Balivet, specialist on Turco-Greek relations and professor at the University of Provence, provides an in-depth study of one of these influential personalities; Bedreddin of Samavna (1358/9-1416). In his lifetime this Sufi leader recruited numerous disciples in Bulgaria, Thrace and Macedonia, and he created a movement which probably merged with the Bektashi movement founded by Hajji Bektash. This book offers an excellent discussion of Bedreddin’s political role and his religious influence on the development of mystical Islam in the Balkans.

The Latent Trace of Islamic Origins

This work presents a putative reconstruction, testing the hypothesis that Islam is historically linked to Jewish Christianity. The argument takes the Qur’anic text to be a valid start-point for historical inquiry and reconstructs from biased views of Jewish Christianity the notion of an enduring Nasorean movement. The effective link between the Nasorean movement and the Meccan religious awakening is the preaching of the Qur’anic Prophet Shu’ayb in Midian, on the border of Arabia.

Approaches to the History of the Interpretation of the Qur’ān

In recent years, the Qur’ān has come to the forefront of scholarly investigations in Islamic studies. However, the traditional interpretation of the book, commonly termed tafsīr, remains a vast, virtually untapped field of investigation. Many Muslims tend to ignore the material, seeing it as a storehouse of traditional restraints, and scholars frequently gloss over its importance as a historical record of the Muslim community, not appreciating the depth and breadth of the literature. The essays gathered here expose and explore various aspects of the field of tafsīr, and their potential for scholarly research.
