This unique book is dedicated to one of the least studied genres of Turkish folklore: the nursing rhyme. Here, Turkologist Rémy Dor presents more than 200 nursing rhymes from all corners of Turkey, from Kars in the East to Edirne in the North-West. As one of the first works in the field, this book seeks to make accessible rather than analyze the nursing rhymes of Turkey. The majority of the examples presented were collected by P.N. Boratav between 1927 and the 1980s in cities and villages of Anatolia, supplied by material collected by A. Caferoglu in the same period. The nursing rhymes are divided into two categories: rhymes concerned with numbers and the alphabet, and shorter and more complex rhymes. Examples from other Turkic languages, including Kazakh, Uzbek and Tatar, are consulted to shed light on the Turkish rhymes. The book is written in both Turkish and French, making it accessible to readers of both languages. The rhymes are supplied with explanatory notes, suggesting their historical origin, explaining dialectal variations and the rules of performance.
