The Syriac scholar Clemens Joseph David (1829-1890) shows his ecclesiastical and practical interests in this volume, first printed with the French title Essai sur les contrats de fiançailles et de mariage suivant les canons de l’Église Romaine et des Rites Orienteaux at the Dominican Press in Mosul. He studies the practices and laws of engagement and marriage among Syriac Catholics with an eye to Roman Canon Law on these aspects. This study, comprising nine chapters, will be of interest to historians and other scholars working on Christianity, in particular Catholic Christianity, in the Middle East.
