Marutha of Maipherqat (4th-5th cents.), a bishop and doctor, had a major role in convening the Synod of Seleucia-Ctesiphon in 410, at which the Persian bishops officially accepted the Council of Nicea. The work here translated from Syriac contains the canons, the letter to Mar Isaac, a history of monasticism, a list of heresies, explanations of ecclesiastical titles, a legend concerning Helen, and a commentary on the Creed. In the introduction, among other matters, Braun discusses the proper order of these parts, which are confused in the manuscript. Readers concerned with the history of 4th-5th century Christianity, especially outside the Roman empire, will find this volume of interest.
