The amusing side of philology: In 1919, Ernst v. d. Planitz claimed to have discovered a letter in which a Egyptian doctor called Benan discussed his youthful acquaintance with "Jesu from Anu", or Jesus. Here, the professor of theology at Berlin takes this claim apart by proving the manuscript's dubious origins and the impossibility of its forged Coptic. He also examines Planitz, a former scandal-mongering journalist, and his ideas of the classical world. This work contains an appendix with Planitz's original announcement and the Schmidt-Planitz correspondence.
