This collection of newspaper articles were originally published in the Madrid-based newspaper La Epoca during the late nineteenth century when the ‘Eastern Question’ had become a major issue in European foreign policy. The author of these articles, Diego de Coello Quesada, was a former Spanish envoy to the Ottoman Empire. Quesada’s knowledge of the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Sudan and the independent Balkan countries offers unique insight into the workings of the ‘Eastern’ states. The Spanish perspective is not one which has been studied closely, and this book, under the editorship of Pablo Martin Asuero, is a valuable addition to the present scholarship.
