In addition to the long poem named in the title, this volume contains, in English translation, a shorter work entitled “An Exhortation to Repentance,” as well as three very short works on prayer and the “Renunciation of the World.” The translator has also offered several notes to elucidate the texts. A thorough introduction deals specifically with the poem on Nineveh’s repentance, and the book concludes with indices for Syriac words discussed, Scripture, and subjects. Students of Syriac literature and of early Christian literature generally will find the volume an interesting specimen of Ephrem in English.
