Brooke Foss Westcott, noted for his foundational work on the canon of the New Testament, presented this series of lectures at Peterborough in 1880. Intended as a form of devotional instruction, Westcott applies his considerable knowledge to the eleven articles of the Apostles’ Creed. His notes on several broader subjects such as the ideas of religion, faith, divine fatherhood, the blood of Christ, and the communion of saints are added to his observations on the Creed. Also in this fourth edition Westcott included the texts of the Nicaean Creed and the Creed of Constantinople for ease of comparison.

Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901) was a highly regarded theologian and churchman. He eventually came to hold the prestigious Regis Professorship of Divinity at Cambridge University and was also elected as Bishop of Durham. A prolific writer of theological material, Westcott has left a legacy of many foundational volumes.
