The product of Heath Lowry’s many years of work on Ottoman tax registers (tahrir defterleri) and legal codes (kanunnameler) have been collected here in this collection of articles. Lowry’s research - ‘defterology’ - is focused on urban history but he has also addressed monastic history, and the papers here reflect these concentrations. In this single volume, we can see the breadth of Lowry’s work, which ranges from Trabzon on the Black Sea through to Macedonia. The data which Lowry has collected is used in case studies on a variety of topics pertaining to Ottoman history which otherwise would have no source available. Like his other work, this collection of essays will serve as a foundation for further study into Ottoman ‘defterology’.
