The Collected Historical Essays of Aphram I Barsoum (2-volume set, hardback)

Barsoum’s wrote many historical essays which he published in now hard-to-find journals, mainly al-Ḥikmah and al-Majalla al-Baṭriyarkiyya al-Suryāniyya (Jerusalem). This collection of articles, published in the original Arabic with an English translation by Matti Moosa, forms the core of Barsoum’s historical writings.

Ignatius Aphram I Barsoum (1887-1957) belonged to a group of early twentieth-century Middle East Syriac scholars who made significant contributions to the field of Syriac studies not only because of their profound knowledge of their own traditions and manuscripts, but also because of their familiarity with the great manuscript collections of Europe and with the writings of the European orientalists. Barsoum’s wrote many historical essays which he published in now hard-to-find journals, mainly al-Ḥikmah and al-Majalla al-Baṭriyarkiyya al-Suryāniyya, both publications of St. Mark’s Monastery, Jerusalem. This collection of articles, published in the original Arabic with an English translation by Matti Moosa, forms the core of Barsoum’s historical writings and is published as a sequel to his History of the Syriac Dioceses, also available in English translation by Matti Moosa (Gorgias Press, 2009).
