Henri Pognon, who was the French Consul in Aleppo, gives here the Syriac text of Hippocrates’ Aphorisms, together with a French translation of them. Both the edition of the Syriac text and the French translation are prefaced with detailed introductions dealing with the manuscript (purchased by Pognon in Aleppo)—which contained parallel Arabic and Syriac versions of the Aphorisms—and several other matters related to this text and the transmission of such material from Greek to Syriac (and Arabic). The editor provides numerous textual notes to the Syriac text, and notes dealing with Greek-Syriac translation to the French text. A Syriac-Greek glossary of medical terms concludes the volume.
