This grammatical study, the author’s doctoral dissertation, focuses on the Demonstrations of fourth century Syriac author Aphrahat, and in particular, how the relative particle d- is used. In the introduction, Hartwig briefly surveys the characteristics of Aphrahat’s language, especially with respect to its witness as early Syriac (including vocabulary and loanwords). A great number of examples from Aphrahat’s writings are included in both Syriac and in German translation, so linguists who do not know Syriac can still benefit from the syntactical discussion. In addition to focusing on Syriac, Hartwig includes numerous references to relevant usages of Rabbinic Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic.
