The Virgin Mary was a common subject of Christian hymns and poetry, particularly within the Syriac tradition. Anton Baumstark presents here the texts of two such compositions on the topic of Mary’s passing. The first of these compositions is attributed to Jacob of Serug. As another version of the Syriac text of this work was previously published by Bedjan, Baumstark presents here only a Latin translation with variants between the versions noted in an apparatus. For the second memra, which is attributed to John of Birta, Baumstark includes the Syriac text, set in verse, along with a Latin translation. Baumstark offers an introduction to the texts, including physical descriptions of the manuscript involved and a brief discussion of their relationship to comparable texts.
